Message from the Chair of the Board

Tribute to Dr. Lee

We are all deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Dr. Jong-Wook Lee, the WHO Director-General, earlier this week.

Dr. Lee’s global leadership over the years in immunization and the fight against tuberculosis and, more recently, with SARS and the avian influenza can only be described as that of a true and committed public health general.

The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will always be deeply indebted to Dr Lee for his contribution to the Stop TB campaign. His understanding and application of the techniques necessary to make public-private sector partnerships in this area work has redounded to the benefit of the Global Fund. In this regard, he has left in his wake a legacy for us to continue.

His near quarter of a century contribution to the global health arena through WHO, stands as an enduring monument to his life and service while at the same time fundamentally improving the quality of life for millions of people around the world.

Dr Lee’s contributions to the governance of the Global Fund have been forthright, constructive and unequivocal while providing valued insights in to the workings of the World Health Organization.

On behalf of the Board of the Global Fund I formally offer our condolences to Dr Lee’s wife and family on the passing of this giant in the annals of Public Health medicine.

Carol Jacobs
Chair of the Board,
Global Fund to fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria
